چکیده

In this paper, the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) as one application of mobile data services is examined with the aim to give guidelines for the dimensioning of next generation mobile radio networks. The performance of WAP-based applications over GPRS is evaluated in scenarios where the GPRS radio resources are shared with conventional Internet applications like WWW and e-mail. Simulation results for quality of service measures for the different applications and GPRS system measures are produced with the simulation tool GPRSim that models the application and user behavior, the TCP/IP and WAP protocol architecture, the GPRS protocol architecture and the radio channel. Especially the effect of traffic generated by conventional Internet applications on the WAP performance and vice versa are determined. These results give an estimation for the GPRS network capacity needed for a traffic mix of WAP-based and conventional Internet applications.

Traffic Modeling and Performance Evaluation in GSM/GPRS Networks

The sharing of resources between different users and different services is a key concept of radio resources dimensioning in GSM/GPRS networks. In this paper we present dimensioning rules based on traffic evaluation and quality of service level for GSM/GPRS users, focused on two radio resources allocation strategies: CP (Complete Partitioning) and PP( Partial Partitioning). The quality of service...

Analysis and Modelling of Wap Traffic in Gprs Networks

Mobile data services are widely available to GSM subscribers already for some years. From these, the WAP service was designed to access hypertext content from handheld terminals. Due to the slow circuit-switched access and the lack of available content, WAP service was initially weakly received. However, the deployment of GPRS access service and the spread of terminals with advanced audio and v...

Improving the Performance of RPL Routing Protocol for Internet of Things

The emerging Internet of Things (IoT) connects the physical world to the digital one and composes large networks of smart devices to support various applications. In order to provide a suitable communication in such networks, a reliable routing protocol is needed. In this paper, a modified version of an IPv6 Routing Protocol for Low-Power and Lossy networks (RPL), which has been standardized by...

GSM Phase 2+ General Packet Radio Service GPRS: Architecture, Protocols, and Air Interface

The General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) is a new bearer service for GSM that greatly improves and simplifies wireless access to packet data networks, e.g., to the Internet. It applies a packet radio principle to transfer user data packets in an efficient way between mobile stations and external packet data networks. This tutorial gives an introduction to GPRS. The article discusses the system a...
